TMZ has reported that UFC Light-Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones was arrested for suspicion of DUI, after crashing his Bentley into a pole in Binghamton, NY. No serious injuries were reported for the champion, but he was taken into custody and made bail a few hours after the arrest.
“I can confirm that Jon Jones was arrested early this morning on suspicion of DUI,” Jones’ manager, Malki Kawa, said in a statement. “While the facts of this situation are still being gathered and situated, First Round Management fully supports Jon and we are asking for fans and media to respect the privacy of Jon and his family during this time.”
The poster-boy for the UFC, Jones, 24, has been placed on an unrealistic pedestal. His super PC image is what lead to him landing large sponsors like K-Swiss’ FORM Athletics and the UFC. The arrest could affect his ability to land future sponsors. Although, Jones will likely keep the support of the UFC and serve no time in jail, the UFC will need to run damage control on a large scale to protect their investment.
At present Jones is set to defend his light-heavyweight title against Dan Henderson at UFC 151, booked for September 1 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV.
Time will tell whether his legal woes will have an affect on the match.
