Former UFC champion Frank Mir is making his way to Strikeforce where he’s expected to face Daniel Cormier at an event later this Fall.

According to sources close to the organization, Strikeforce has opted to cut its heavyweight title, meaning the Mir-Cormier matchup will be a non-title fight.

USA Today originally reported that the fight will take place on Sept. 29 as part of the Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Healy card in Sacramento. However, sources at Yahoo! Sports have stated the date and venue are still pending, with plans to scheduling the fight in October or November.

In Cormier’s last appearance, he defeated Josh Barnett in the finals of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix after starting the tournament as an alternate.

Mir last fought at UFC 146 in May, where he lost his bid for the UFC heavyweight championship to Junior dos Santos. Dos Santos scored a technical knockout over Mir in the second round, successfully defending his belt for the first time since defeating the former champion, Cain Velasquez in Nov. 2011 at the first UFC on Fox event.
