Accused Murderer's Bond Set at Four Billion Dollars by Texas Justice

11 February, 2017, 04:58 | Author: Mae Harvey

Willis' lawyer has asked for a reduction, but for some a question remains as to why the bond was set so high.

Willis turned himself in last week for the murder of Donte Samuels on December 22, The Temple Daily Telegram reported.

Willis turned himself in to police on the outstanding warrant accusing him of the murder and appeared in court before Bell County Justice of the Peace Claudia Brown.

Willis' lawyer, Billy Ray Hall Jr., says he believes the amount will be lowered when he makes a request to the state district judge.

Another Bell County lawyer, Michael White, said bail is set to protect the public and make sure a defendant shows up to court - it isn't a type of punishment, he said.

Another Bell County lawyer, Michael White, said the bond is created to protect the public not to be a punitive measure saying the bail was a "mockery".

Brown said she wanted to impose a $100,000 bond on 25-year-old Antonio Marquis Willis, but that she was challenged by officials involved in the case. The bond is higher than TxDOT Waco District's 96-mile expansion from Hillsboro to Salado which is estimated at $2.5 billion.

Judge Brown says she set the high bond amount to send a message. Durst's bond was eventually lowered to $450,000.

At the time, Durst had recently been acquitted of killing his neighbor while living in Texas.

It should be noted that Brown was elected to her office in November 2016.

She could not be immediately reached for comment, but a reporter quoted her as saying "people are going into prison like it's adult day care, and it's mostly because they can't afford to get out with the unemployment how it is", according to the Temple Daily Telegram.
