NFL Warns Texas There Could Be Consequences for 'Bathroom Bill'

The bill is similar to a law that was enacted in North Carolina past year.
With Houston drawing huge attention and revenues from hosting Super Bowl 51 last weekend, the impact of losing any hope of another host role either there or in Dallas, which hosted the 2011 Super Bowl, could be devastating.
The bill itself would force individuals to use restrooms that correspond with the sex on their birth certificate.
In a statement Friday, NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy said any such law that is "discriminatory or inconsistent with our values" would "certainly be a factor" in awarding future Super Bowls.
The NFL is the first major sporting organization to comment directly when asked about Texas' bathroom bill, which would ban cities from requiring private businesses to allow transgender Texans to use the bathroom of their choice. Under the bill, if a private association, business or sports league leased out a publicly owned venue for an event, the state or local governments that oversee that venue would have no say in the bathroom policies there for that event. The NBA also took the All-Star Game out of Charlotte and the ACC picked up its ACC Football Championship Game and relocated to Orlando past year.
This month's Super Bowl was expected to bring the Houston area a net economic benefit of around $350 million, according to the Host Committee.
The next four Super Bowls are scheduled to be played in Minneapolis, Atlanta, Miami and Los Angeles. Like the proposed Texas Law, HB2 was viewed by many as being anti-LGBTQ.
If the bill is enacted and the National Football League follows through with its statement, Texas could see a major drop in its second largest industry: tourism. Houston has now hosted the Super Bowl three times, and Arlington has hosted the game once (and with that venue in Arlington, it is likely it both places will host the Super Bowl again in the future, multiple times).
