Plane crashes into Australian mall killing five

A small plane crashed into a shopping mall in Australia on Monday afternoon, killing five people on board, four of whom were United States citizens, the U.S. State Department said. The four passengers were from the United States, while the pilot was Australian.

The Herald Sun, a newspaper in Melbourne, identified Glenn Garland, a successful Austin entrepreneur, as a third victim.

Victoria Police say they have spoken to and are providing support to the immediate families. The pilot reported a "catastrophic engine failure" moments before the crash, police said.

Victoria's Emergency Management Commissioners Craig Lapsley said the state of Victoria had "learned a lot from Bourke Street" tragedy and would use their tragic January event as a sounding board for how they tend to witnesses of tragic events.

Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association executive director Benjamin Morgan said planning rules which had allowed large buildings close to airport runways meant pilots no longer had space in the case of emergencies.

"The first thing we thought was someone let off a bomb in one of the bins. the one of the boys ran over and said it's a plane, it's a plane, a plane's gone down".

A witness described the crash as a "massive fireball".

"We didn't see the plane come down but we felt the explosion, we felt the shock wave from it", Mr Mayer said. "We just knew this was bad and there was nothing we could do".

Professor Roger Stone, Director of the International Centre for Applied Climate Sciences at the University of Southern Queensland, who worked for many years as an aviation meteorologist said "It's a big mistake to call a Beechcraft King Air a "light plane". Please avoid the area". Expect heavy delays on all detours, ' VicRoads warned.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews told reporters on Tuesday he would wait on the outcome of investigations into the crash before commenting on Essendon's future.

The Direct Factory Outlets mall was closed when it was hit by the twin-engine Beechcraft Super King Air, according to media reports.

Cape Wickham Links, one of three golf courses on the island, said everyone it had been expecting on Tuesday had already turned up.
