DeVos: Black Colleges Are 'Pioneers' of 'School Choice'

I have asked many public school teachers their opinions on DeVos and none of them support her. Education is an extremely important part of life and a more experienced person should be in charge of it. They also saw no improvement in reading.
Since DeVos squeaked through a tumultuous confirmation process, her debut has hit some potholes. However, this takes money away from public schools, destabilizes them, and creates more income for management.
"Given the kinds of waves happening inside schools", Dynarski says, "it's hard to see how vouchers actually cause the school to stop what they're doing and say, 'We need a plan to respond'".
Charter schools have been positioned against public schools based on the idea that school choice will lead to a better education.
In the Jim Crow era, HBCUs provided a minority of black students a chance to attain higher learning and social mobility - even as the broader inequities of the public-education system kept most black children locked out of educational opportunity. Trump's Cabinet nominees "were selected for a reason, and that is deconstruction", he said. "Wariness shouldn't automatically translate into an unwillingness to work together". Shortly after DeVos' confirmation, Dunn wrote to ask her to visit. If one more Republican would have voted against her, then she would not be our new secretary of education.
The statement is laughable considering HBCUs were created because blacks weren't allowed to freely attend public or private universities, because, you know, racism and such.
Now that the Trump administration has reversed President Obama's guidelines for transgender students and will let states decide their own standards, DeVos is taking the brunt of that action, too.
The Department of Education even clearly states on its website that HBCUs were established because "there was no structured higher education system for black students". Test scores in math and reading have remained among the worst in the nation. Martin West, a professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, calls the negative effects in Louisiana "as large as any I've seen in the literature" - not just compared with other voucher studies, but in the history of American education research. "But not just to confront that agenda but to offer an alternative, which is a strong public school system rooted in the principles of the community that produces strong outcomes for kids".
No teacher or educator should ever be interested in a "fight" against education if they have the students' best interests in mind.
Earlier this month, Betsy DeVos was confirmed as President Trump's Secretary of Education - by the narrowest of margins. He credits that initiative for rising graduation rates, new school options, and growing enrollment. "Trump has also called for more teaching of citizenship and civic skills, more comprehensive education (as opposed to education based nearly entirely around the subject the student is studying), and has condemned what he sees as public schools going needlessly out of their way to avoid "[damaging] students' self-esteem".
Marybeth Gasman, director of the University of Pennsylvania's Center for Minority-Serving Institutions, called DeVos" statement "inaccurate and a whitewashing of US history, ' according to Politico.
Since becoming secretary, DeVos asked about visiting, he said.
"I think she was honestly trying to find a way to connect her experience with HBCUs", he told The Chronicle of Higher Education.
"It would be really wonderful if the statement had talked about the origins of HBCUs and admitted to the vast amount of discrimination in the way African-Americans were treated", Gasman said.
Although Massachusetts ranked near the top for elementary through high school education, it ranked 20 in higher education. News also ranked states in the three sub-elements that went into the overall ranking for healthcare.
