President Trump blames Obama for leaks and protests

  • Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin listens at right as President Donald Trump speaks during a meeting on the Federal budget Wednesday Feb. 22 2017 in the Roosevelt Room of the White House in Washington

The immediate reaction from Republicans was mixed, with defense hawks like Sen.

IBD'S TAKE: Even if Trump ramps up defense spending analysts warn that a massive buildup on the scale of what was seen under President Ronald Reagan is unlikely.

Spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders says it's "kind of naive of us to think that we can all walk into a room for a couple of hours and pretend that some of that tension isn't there".

President Donald Trump has apparently chose to break with long-standing tradition and not break bread with the mainstream media, who he has branded as failing, fake and "the enemy of the American people, "at the White House Correspondents Association Dinner".

Asked about those plans, top Senate Republican Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said, "We'll see how it works out".

Foreign aid makes up about 1 percent of the budget.

The president argued that "it's only getting worse" and that 2017 will be "a catastrophic year".

"I will not be attending the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner this year", he wrote.

While most new presidents enjoy a honeymoon period, Trump is saddled with record low approval ratings - just 44 per cent of Americans approve of his job performance, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal survey.

The pool reporter remained in a van outside the hotel until Trump's motorcade departed the hotel several hours later and arrived at the White House, without the pooler catching a glimpse of the president. Its budget has largely flatlined in recent years because of Congressional spending caps, but the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have wound down so significantly that it's not clear the Defense Department actually needs as much money as it has, let alone tens of billions of dollars more.

McCain said Trump's Pentagon plans would fall short by nearly $40 billion and represent just a small increase over former President Barack Obama's recent Pentagon wish list. With a world on fire, America can not secure peace through strength with just 3 percent more than President Obama's budget.

(The latter remains blocked by a federal appeals court, though the White House promises a replacement order shortly after the speech.) The White House emailed a list of some of Trump's early accomplishments to supporters Monday afternoon, along with information on how to watch the address.

The Congress, although controlled by his fellow Republicans, may not necessarily follow Trump's proposal for the budget.

JOHN YANG: Budget officials said proposals for taxes and entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare will come later.

Trump has said he has no investments in Russian Federation, and Democrats acknowledged they have no evidence otherwise.
