Ranchi Test: Wriddhiman Saha's maiden ton vs Australia testament to his grit

19 March, 2017, 14:27 | Author: Eloise Marshall

In a partnership reminiscent of their 316-run unbroken second wicket stand in Rest of India's Irani Cup match earlier this year, Pujara and Saha looked tireless and denied the Australians success after India resumed the day on 390/6 under overcast conditions.

They saw through a hostile spell by Pat Cummins, who sent down three consecutive maiden overs, and were more comfortable against the slow bowlers.

Home skipper Virat Kohli called his batsmen in as soon as they crossed the 600-run mark and unleashed his spinners on Australia to drive home the advantage.

As far as Australia is concerned, Pat Cummins has bowled with unnerving pace and tenacity to settle the Indian batsmen and only Pujara has been able to counter his successfully.

Left-arm spinner O'Keefe attacked Kohli on the roughs outside the leg, hoping to get a leading edge. "It allows you to play naturally", said Murali Vijay, who scored 82 and put on 102 for the second wicket with Pujara.

India started the day at 120 for one, trailing Australia's first innings total by 331 more runs. Saha was nowhere near a ball angled into him, and there was some discussion with Pujara before he reviewed. In the middle session, I think they had the better of us. "It's quite evenly poised".

Once past his hundred, he too went for quick runs and fell to Steve O'Keefe who bowled a staggering 77 overs for his three wickets as Australia endured a tough day on the field. "To produce some of the balls that he produced to get wickets was exciting", said Australia's assistant coach David Saker.

When the India one-day global (ODI) squad then heads to England for the defence of the Champions Trophy, Pujara will once again stay behind, unless some English county is astute enough to acquire his services for a few Championship games. "Ball speed in India is a big thing because the wickets don't generate any pace.we know what sort of a talent he has but it was so pleasing to see him do well".

Right from the first ball of the day, the two overnight batsmen showed that there was an intent to score runs and chip away at the deficit, which was 91 overnight.

(S.P.D. Smith 178 not out, G.J. Maxwell 104, M.T. Renshaw 44; R.A. Jadeja 5-124, U.T. Yadav 3-106).

Ranchi (Jharkhand)[India], Mar. 19 (ANI): All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja struck twice on Day Four to put India under control of the ongoing third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy here at the Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) International Stadium here on Sunday.
