Amid numerous controversies at Uber, disillusioned President Jeff Jones steps down

The now former president of Uber was hired in August past year to address some of the most troubling aspects of the company, including operations and marketing; a demanding task that might have required a single leadership, not two.

Uber President Jeff Jones has resigned, the company confirmed to NBC News on Sunday.

Jones' departure is directly related to the multiple recent controversies dogging the San Francisco-based startup, Recode reported Sunday. And it suggests that Jones, who left a behind a job as chief marketing officer of Target to join Uber last October, may see sticking with Uber as a career killer.

Much of Jones' initial tenure as president of Uber was spent meeting with drivers, after which he sent drivers an email about what he learned and what the company intends to do.

Jones, according to sources, said that Uber's mounting roster of troubling controversies wasn't what he signed up for, especially after the fact that Kalanick made a decision to survey for a new chief operating officer for aid. Top Engineer, Amit Singhal was also asked to resign as he failed to disclose the claims of sexual harassment against him at Google, his previous employer.

Uber hired Jones past year from US retail giant Target Corp., where he was chief marketing officer.

Jones was hired last August and was in charge of the company's customer support, branding and operations.

The company was the subject of a consumer boycott after the company continued to operate during a taxicab protest at New York's John F. Kennedy Airport following President Trump's first travel ban.

Jones in a brief statement said he left because it was apparent his career tenets and experience were inconsistent with what he saw in Uber.

Uber didn't immediately respond to a request for comment on McClendon's departure.

Privately, however, the company has been shocked by his sudden departure, with other executives left disappointed at what they saw as a lack of professional courtesy in informing them of his plans.

Jones is not the only executive leaving the company.

The turmoil began when a former Uber employee posted a blog describing that Uber had a bad working environment, where sexual harassment was led unpunished.

"I'll be staying on as an adviser", McClendon said in a statement. Earlier this month, Ed Baker, Uber's vice president of product and growth, and Charlie Miller, Uber's famed security researcher, departed.
