Britain to trigger Article 50 'EU divorce process' on March 29

The European Commission's Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier has said they must be wrapped up by October 2018 to give the EU and national parliaments time to ratify the deal.

Tusk has tweeted that "within 48 hours of the United Kingdom triggering Article 50, I will present the draft Brexit guidelines to the European Union 27 member states".

"We are going to be out there, negotiating hard, delivering on what the British people voted for".

The spokesperson said it is hoped negotiations will start "promptly", adding: "But we fully appreciate it is right that they have the opportunity to agree their position".

Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas said Monday that "we have been informed in advance".

May has said since October that she intends to trigger Brexit by the end of March, without being more precise. This will be essential in more regulated sectors like financial services, pharmaceuticals and energy. If Britain leaves without a transitional deal, it could lead to the immediate imposition of tariffs and other trade barriers.

Another crucial point will be how Britain approaches the idea of a transitional deal to cover the period after it leaves the European Union, but before a new trade deal is negotiated. Settling this issue is crucial to business owners and the economy.

Britain would be the first country in the EU to trigger Article 50 - a section of the Lisbon Treaty that sets out how a member state could commence the process, with negotiations on the European side conducted by the Council, following consent of the European Parliament. "@GOVUK somehow forgot to inform us".

Brexit minister David Davis has said there would be no sudden drop in numbers, as it would take years to fill low-skilled jobs in hospitality, social care and agriculture now done by immigrants.

The IFG - an independent charity that aims to increase government effectiveness - says departments will need "ruthlessly to prioritise" other legislation and find non-legislative routes to get the laws through, particularly given the government's narrow Commons majority. Britain is now more divided at home and isolated overseas.

That is likely to infuriate Nationalists, particularly with debate still raging over a second independence referendum. Pro-EU Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron warned that May was embarking on an "extreme and divisive" Brexit plan. She has rushed this through without a plan, and without a clue.

She has been vocal that Britain is heading for a "bad deal" on Brexit and apparently wants out.
