  • Shakespeare’ of Rock ‘n’ Roll Chuck Berry Dies at 90

Slash, the Guns N' Roses guitarist, said he was "heartbroken" by the news, and that Berry was "undisputedly the king".

The rock "n" roll icon recorded hits like "Jonny B. Goode" and "Sweet Little Sixteen". First responders found an unresponsive man and were unable to revive him, the official statement said.

"The family requests privacy during this time of bereavement", the Facebook post read.

A reviewer for Lehigh Valley Music said Berry's guitar was horribly out of tune, his singing often reduced to chanting the lyrics to his songs, his once-rocking riffs jagged.

The rock legend is best known for hits the likes of "Johnny B. Goode", "You Never Can Tell", "My Ding-a-Ling" and "Shake, Rattle and Roll" among others. "All of us in rock have now lost our father", he tweeted.

Both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones covered Berry's songs, as did The Beach Boys and scores of other acts - including Elvis.

In later years he was notorious for rolling into concerts with nothing but his guitar, playing with any old pickup band.

"If you tried to give rock "n" roll another name", John Lennon once said, "you might call it "Chuck Berry".

Just this past October, on his 90th birthday Berry announced plans to team with Dualtone Records to release his first studio album in 38 years next year. "Johnny B. Goode" was included alongside music by the likes of Bach, Beethoven and Mozart on the golden record launched aboard the Voyager I spacecraft in 1977.

"Hail hail rock n roll".

He was 90 years old.

One of the first inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Berry wove together beguiling narratives, fusing rhythm and blues with country and western - and transfixing the nation.

Musicians, celebrities, former presidents and music fans alike offered remembrances and praise for the man who many rock "n" roll giants have said is inseparable from the genre.

These among the Berry teens who became popular musicians played his music themselves, even admitting their efforts were their pale imitations of what they heard Berry doing. As Steve Martin showed on a 1978 episode of Saturday Night Live, future aliens will likely have one demand: "Send More Chuck Berry".
