Equinox brings spring, not egg balancing skill

However, not every year does this event mark the first day of the spring.

You may have heard that you can stand an egg on end at the moment of an equinox, particularly the vernal equinox.

Enjoy the magical vernal equinox!

While it is already meteorological spring, most consider spring to begin on the Spring Equinox. For one thing, our calendar is only an approximation of how long it takes the earth to orbit the sun, so it's not really an even number of days. To wit, equinox comes from the Latin words "aequus" (equal) and "nox" (night).

This is an exciting time for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, since it means new beginnings, as the earth seems to come to life again.

Astronomers time the seasons using the solstices and equinoxes of earth's orbit around the sun.

In a world in which many of us are overextended and stressed, the fact that the planet is spinning around a tilted axis at over 1,000 miles per hour can be lost. There's always someplace where the sun is directly overhead, but it only occurs exactly at the equator on the equinox. The latter is known as autumnal equinox or fall equinox.

What I'm trying to say is today is the "astronomical" first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, as opposed to the climatological first day of spring, which is still a little ways off, which means today you should at least feel spiritually warmer, although in physical terms, you might still want to wear that goofy toque with the little furry ball on the top. This year it will be on September 22 at 4:02 p.m.

During the Equinox, days are equal to nights in most places across the globe. Those days are the longest/shortest of the year depending on where you live. But now the sun is headed our way in the Northern Hemisphere, so warmer days are ahead. It is a myth, however, because the hours of daylight at the equinox are slightly longer than the night.

Day and night won't be exactly the same length.

For the vernal equinox, if you were in central Africa on Monday and looked up at noon, the sun would be directly above your head.
