European Union says 'everything is ready' for Brexit trigger

Britain's ambassador to the EU, Tim Barrow, informed the office of European Council president Donald Tusk morning of the Prime Minister's plans this morning.

U.K. Brexit Secretary David Davis has said "the first meeting, bluntly, will be about how we do this?" The government is clear in its aims: a deal that works for every nation and region of the United Kingdom and indeed for all of Europe.

LONDON/BRUSSELS Prime Minister Theresa May will trigger Britain's divorce proceedings with the European Union on March 29, launching two years of negotiations that will reshape the future of the country and Europe. We want negotiations to start promptly. The top politicians will carve out negotiating positions and guidelines for the European Commission, the bloc's executive arm, to follow.

A response from the group is expected in around 48 hours after the UK's notification, according to European Commission negotiator Michel Barnier. Mr Tusk said recently that European Union leaders would respond within "more or less 48 hours" of the letter, starting possibly the most complicated series of negotiations in British history.

But EU negotiators warn it could take two years just to settle the divorce terms; agreeing on a new relationship for the United Kingdom and the EU could take years longer.

Theresa May will fire the starting gun for Brexit on Wednesday next week, Downing Street officially revealed today.

"We are waiting for the letter, and yes everything is ready from this side of the road", said the Berlaymont chief spokesperson Margaritis Schinas during Monday's midday briefing.

Of the United Kingdom's four nations, Scotland and Northern Ireland voted to stay in the European Union in the June 23 vote while England and Wales voted to leave.

EU leaders have said they want to conclude the talks within 18 months to allow the terms of the UK's exit to be ratified by the UK Parliament and the European Parliament, as well as approved by the necessary majority of EU states.

"Labour will hold the prime minister to account all the way, and argue for a Brexit deal that puts jobs, the economy and living standards first".

May has promised parliament a vote on the final Brexit deal, but warned that rejecting it meant Britain would leave without any agreement. "There is not going to be an early general election".

The Scotland head of state is demanding a second referendum on Scottish independence before the terms of Brexit are signed.
