Brexit Minister David Davis said the withdrawal process will take Britain to "the threshold of the most important negotiation for this country for a generation".

Reacting to the confirmation of the date, Karen Briggs, head of Brexit at KPMG said, "Although the UK's substantial financial contribution to the European Union and its status outside the Schengen Area offer the opportunity for a unique deal to be struck, businesses still need to plan for a "no deal" scenario".

Autumn 2018 to Spring 2019 - Just to make things complicated, Scottish government wants independence vote once Brexit deal is clear.

Although she succeeded David Cameron as prime minister soon after the Brexit referendum, she delayed triggering Article 50 to give herself time to work on her strategy for talks that are likely to determine her political legacy.

The notification of triggering Article 50 of a key European Union treaty will come in the form of a letter delivered to Tusk - though it was unclear whether it would come through an actual letter or an electronic missive.

Mr Jones agreed David Jones agreed that the United Kingdom was at a "huge advantage" in negotiating a trade deal because its current arrangements were "already in alignment" with the bloc's standards.

"We are going to be out there, negotiating hard, delivering on what the British people voted for".

"President Tusk has said he expects an initial response within 48 hours".

Theresa May will fire the starting gun for Brexit on Wednesday next week, Downing Street officially revealed today.

The Prime Minister was in Wales today on a pre-Brexit tour of the United Kingdom created to show she is listening to the views of every region.

A spokesperson said that May will write a letter to the EU's 27 other members to express her intent to have the negotiations begin swiftly.

Some in the European Union argue that the divorce must be finalised first - including the contentious issue of Britain's outstanding bills, which European Union officials have estimated at 60 billion euros.

Brexit will take a substantial toll on Britain's parliament and government departments, according to a report by the Institute for Government (IfG) published Monday.

"They will all see from the UK's example that leaving the European Union is a bad idea", Juncker told German newspaper Bild am Sonntag.
