Therefore, Norway vaulted ahead despite its economy being hit by the plummeting oil price, meanwhile happiness in the USA continues to wain despite incomes increasing.

Thailand is the 32nd happiest country in the world while Norway ranked first, according to a report released at the United Nations to mark the International Day of Happiness on Monday.

The Nordic nations are the most content while countries in sub-Saharan Africa, along with Syria and Yemen, are the least happy of the countries ranked in the fifth annual report. "It's time to build social trust and healthy lives, not guns or walls".

The top ten countries this year were Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland, Finland, Holland, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Sweden.

A new report shows Taiwan is the happiest among the East Asian countries and ranked No. 33 in the world, and improvement from No. 35 previous year.

The makers of the report say on their website that it "continues to gain global recognition as governments, organizations and civil society increasingly use happiness indicators to inform their policy-making decisions".

The study of happiness has become an academic field that has gained focus in recent years - the World Happiness Report contains an entire chapter on relative data for policymakers.

In fact, among the wealthier countries the differences in happiness levels had a lot to do with "differences in mental health, physical health and personal relationships: the biggest single source of misery is mental illness", the report said. That boosted the per person annual income, as measured by economic output, to more than $100,000 - almost double that of the United States. "I think everything that has been proposed goes in the wrong direction", he explained.

"The United States can and should raise happiness by addressing America's multi-faceted social crisis- rising inequality, corruption, isolation, and distrust-rather than focusing exclusively or even mainly on economic growth, especially since the concrete proposals along these lines would exacerbate rather than ameliorate the deepening social crisis".

South Sudan, Liberia, Guinea, Togo, Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi and the Central African Republic were at the bottom.

The U.S. ranked just ahead of Ireland, which took 15th place, and was followed by Germany in 16th, the U.K.in 19th and France in 31st.
