  • Mumbai Resident doctor at Sion hospital attacked by patient’s relatives

It may be recalled that on March 12, relatives of a patient attacked Dr Rohan Mhamunkar at the Dhule Civil Hospital after he suggested that they move the patient, who had suffered a head injury, to another hospital that had better facilities.

Summary: When his condition worsened, he was brought to the civil hospital on Thursday afternoon and he died at 10.45 pm.

Doctors in three Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) run hospitals were on strike demanding security in the wake of mounting attacks on them by patients' relatives.

In a recent update, Mumbai Mayor V Mahadeshwar has asked all doctors to end their strike and return to work by the evening. After the incident, a police complaint was lodged and several of the accused were arrested. The residents, under the banner of Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD), submitted a memorandum to the GMCH Dean Dr Abhimanyu Niswade and pressed for their various demands including protection to them.

Simultaneously, the MARD is filing an affidavit in the Bombay High Court to highlight how its orders on doctors' security and related aspects have allegedly not yet been implemented by the state government.

"It's a serious issue and hence, around 4,000 resident doctors attached to government and BMC-run hospitals have gone on mass casual leave".

"We are keen on increasing the number of doctors (in government hospitals) as well and have taken steps towards it".

Medical Education Minister Girish Mahajan told news agency PTI, "The attacks on resident doctors are unfortunate and assailants should not be spared". A senior doctor said such things do not happen in private hospitals, where patients in the last stage are not accepted. "We are trying to provide more security to doctors".
