  • North Korea 'conducts high-thrust engine test'

"I do not deny there are several individuals, including North Koreans, involved in the assassination and we will use legal channels to apprehend them".

Tillerson called Japan America's "most important ally" but South Korea merely as "an important partner".

The possession of strong nuclear weapons is "the only way" to ultimately put North Korea-U.S. relations in order and "absolute collateral" for peace and security on the Korean Peninsula, the paper said. Wang spoke at a briefing in Beijing with U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who in Seoul on Friday refused to rule out a preemptive strike against Pyongyang if the threat from its weapons program was deemed severe enough.

North Korea on Monday hinted at additional provocations by vowing that it will continue to take nuclear deterrent steps against the U.S.' hard-line policy toward it.

The top USA nuclear envoy will visit Seoul this week to discuss cooperation with his South Korean counterparts against North Korea amid the growing nuclear and missile threats from the reclusive state, government officials said Monday. He also said a "new approach" is necessary for the North, while emphasizing that conditions for talks with Pyongyang are "not ripe".

Malaysia's once-cosy ties with North Korea have frayed in the wake of Kim Jong Nam's assassination. But military analysts believe the test of the new rocket engine would further advance North Korea's goal of being able to create a long-range missile that could reach the United States.

"An ICBM variant of the Unha could be sufficiently similar to the space launch vehicle in that it would be very likely to succeed, making it a good candidate for a political demonstration even though the Unha would make for a poor missile".

Sunday's test was a "precisely-timed spectacular", said Peter Hayes, director of the US-based Nautilus Institute, "the kind we've come to expect from Kim Jong Un". He also said the threat posed by the regime was increasing.

"Let's not forget the ideological aspect of this", Graham said.
