FX confirmed on Monday that Penelope Cruz is going to play Donatella Versace in what is now being called Versace: American Crime Story.

In a rather epic round of casting, Ryan Murphy has tapped Oscar-winning actress Penelope Cruz to play Donatella Versace in his forthcoming series, Versace: American Crime Story.

"Versace" follows the 1997 assassination of iconic fashion designer Gianni Versace. In her US television debut, Cruz will star opposite previously casted stars Edgar Ramirez and Darren Criss as designer Gianni Versace and serial killer Andrew Cunana, respectively. The pop icon won a Golden Globe for her performance on Murphy's other wildly popular FX series, American Horror Story: Hotel. But this news puts those rumors to rest.

This will be the first regular TV gig for Cruz, who became the first Spanish actress to earn a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress (for 2006's Volver). In 2016, Cruz starred in Zoolander 2, The Brothers Grimsby and went on to produce and star in Ma Ma and appear in The Queen of Spain. The season will be based on the 1999 book Vulgar Favors, byVanity Fair writer Maureen Orth. Its second and fourth seasons will focus respectively on the fallout from Hurricane Katrina and the Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky affair.

Last year's The People vs. O.J. Simpson was the first edition of the FX franchise which quickly turned into a critical and commercial darling. It ignited the careers of some of its actors, including Sterling K. Brown, and reinforced the positions of accomplished actors like Sarah Paulson and Cuba Gooding Jr. Tom Rob Smith, who most recently wrote the BBC show London Spy, will write several episodes and serve as a co-producer.
