Qualcomm 205 is a dual-core SoC which clocks at 1.1GHz and supports 4G connectivity on handsets. By launching the Qualcomm 205 Mobile Platform, the San Diego-based company is hoping to address the needs of wireless carriers in emerging markets that are now in the process of transitioning their users from 2G and 3G networks to 4G solutions.

The chipset will enable phones to come with 4G modem that will support download speed of up to 150 megabit per second, access to 2G, 3G and 4G network. Apart from 4G LTE and VoWifi support, the specifications include support for 3G and 2G networks, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1, FM radio, GPS, GLONASS, Beidou with dual-SIM configuration support. The chipmaker is said to have revamped the feature phone suite after close to three years, with a focus on rapidly growing markets such as India, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. Further, rightly concentrating on the new LTE technologies, the new Qualcomm Mobile Platform will take advantage of LTE services like VoLTE (Voice over LTE) and VoWi-Fi (Voice over Wi-Fi).

The 205 Mobile Platform isn't as advanced and feature-packed as its high-end counterparts, but it still packs some decent specs in this suite. Now, these chips will find their way inside future feature and flip phones and in regions where there is no LTE support.

It also supports Linux-based OSes, and is pin-compatible with the Snapdragon 210/ 212, allowing OEMs and ODMs to quickly migrate their designs.

To empower every mobile user in India, global chip manufacturer Qualcomm on Monday launched the "Qualcomm 205" mobile platform created to bring 4G/LTE connectivity to entry-level feature phones.

The US-based firm said that it has partnered with many vendors including Reliance Jio, Micromax, Borqs, Megaphone, Flextronics who plan to sell their 4G feature phones in India.

With the inclusion of 4G LTE into feature phones, the very concept of a "feature phone" is scheduled for a redefinition. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the very bottom of the mobile market. The new Qualcomm 205 Mobile Platform enclose various baseband functionalities along with several hardware components such as RF front end, discrete WiFi, amplifier, power management, software, audio codec and various other software components which will help feature phones operate better.
