Royal Jordanian Bans Electronic Devices From US Flights

20 March, 2017, 23:40 | Author: Mae Harvey

Citing instructions from "concerned USA departments", Royal Jordanian Airlines has reportedly banned all electronic or electrical devices from carry-on luggage on flights to and from New York, Chicago, Detroit and Montreal effective Tuesday, March 21.

Airlines that fly from certain countries in the Middle East and Africa to the USA must require passengers to check in nearly all electronic devices rather than carry them into the cabin, said a US official.

Only one country, Jordan, has announced that it is part of this group, with a tweet (now deleted) that said Royal Jordanian Airlines would allow only mobile phones and medical devices on-board from 21 March.

Royal Jordanian Airlines didn't specify which USA departments instructed this ban, or specify whether the ban was temporary or permanent. "We wish you pleasant flights on board RJ". "We have no comment on potential security precautions, but will provide an update when appropriate", spokesperson Gillian Christensen told Foreign Policy.

American Airlines, Qatar, Etihad, and Emirates did not immediately respond to inquiries about any restrictions to electronics in their cabins on certain or all flights.

Royal Jordanian said any of the above must be stored in checked baggage.

The prohibition is scheduled to begin Tuesday and involves Royal Jordanian flights to New York, Chicago and Detroit, according to an airline tweet. In February, after a federal court temporarily froze the travel ban he ordered, the airline turned the ban into fodder for a cheeky advertisement. The statement did not mention which government agency ordered the new measures and why they're in place.

A tweet from the airline's official account listed new rules for all passengers flying in and out of the US that spell horror for anyone who gets bored on long distance journeys. Global carriers Saudia, Qatar Airways, and Lufthansa didn't immediately return requests for comment.
