Ryan Looks to Thursday Health Care Vote With More Elder Pay Help

  • Speaker of the House Paul Ryan speaks to the media about the American Health Care Act at the Capitol in Washington D.C

He told Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace that he feels "very good" about the bill ahead of Thursday's vote, vowing to make good on the Republican party's promise to "repeal and replace this faulty collapsing law".

"We think we should be offering even more assistance than the bill now does" for lower-income people age 50 to 64, Ryan, the top Republican in Congress, said of the tax credits for health insurance that are proposed in the legislation.

During a meeting at Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida Saturday, the president's top advisers told three of the most vocal conservative opponents of the bill - Sens.

Despite the tweaks Ryan said the bill needs, he added that he feels "very good" about the legislation's progress and where things now stand.

But he said that was one concern of many, and lawmakers from across the GOP's ideological spectrum have expressed fears that the American Health Care Act will not drive down prices.

Democrats say the Republican plan could throw millions off health insurance and hurt the elderly, poor and working families while giving tax cuts to the rich.

The House Republican health care bill, created to repeal and replace Obamacare, will go to Congress for a vote this Thursday. Skeptical Senate Republicans, like Ted Cruz of Texas, said the current legislation is dead on arrival. And because the ACA restricted insurers' ability to "age-rate" - or charge much higher premiums for older individuals - repealing the bill will cause an initial increase in premiums for low-income seniors not yet on Medicare. This comes after critics highlight the glaring inefficiencies in the bill to address healthcare for Americans aged 50 or above. Still, some older and low-income people would see their premiums rise substantially, according to the report. That, according to the CBO estimate, leads to substantial cost savings that - together with cuts to Medicaid - allow the GOP plan to eliminate almost all of the taxes imposed under the ACA.

But Ryan admitted that there were improvements to be made to the bill until it is brought to the floor.

"We believe we should have even more assistance".

Paul said Monday to a group of Louisville business leaders that he hoped the Republican bill would fail so that "true negotiations" could begin. "You have to stop them". Republicans hold a majority in the chamber but can not afford to have more than 21 defections for the measure to pass. He cited Trump's hands-on involvement as a key factor is moving the legislation forward. As a result, he said there will be some "fine-tuning improvements" to the law that will help assuage some members' "concerns". "The president is bringing people to his table, and I'm very impressed with how the president is helping us close this bill, and making the improvements that we've been making, getting the votes".
