  • School Says Texas AG Is Grandstanding on Muslims

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is making national headlines after his office sent a letter to a Frisco, Texas High School inquiring about a prayer room used by students.

A Frisco ISD spokesperson told KERA the prayer room at Liberty High School has always been open to all students.

At issue is not Frisco's Liberty High School availing a space for students to pray, the attorney general's office wrote in a letter to the Frisco Independent School District superintendent. "So all we did with this letter was ask the school district for their policy, and ask them if they were inclusive or exclusive, but so far, we have not heard back". However, it appears that students are being treated differently based on their religious beliefs. "Such a practice, of course, is irreconcilable with our nation's enduring commitment to religious liberty".

"Reports from Liberty's news site indicate that the prayer room is not available to students of all faiths.

The principal of Liberty High School noted in his interview there have not been any issues for over seven (7) years with this room, that is, however, until the OAG's 'Press Release.' It is important to note Frisco ISD is greatly concerned that this type of inflammatory rhetoric in the current climate may place the District, its students, staff, parents and community in danger of unnecessary disruption", the district wrote in its response to Leonie. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) tweeted on Friday that "many of you have questioned" the prayer room "issue".

The representative said the prayer room is open to students practicing any religion.

Paxton stressed: "We didn't accuse the school district of having just one group [use the prayer room and] we are not discouraging the actual program".

"I assure you that that room is accessible to all students of all denominations, all walks of faith, all cultures, all ethnicities, and I assure you that that is in place", said Chris Moore, the executive director of communications and community relations for Frisco ISD. He turned up on Fox News over the weekend and again insisted that the prayer room must be open for all students, disregarding the fact that it already is.

Every day at lunch, a handful of teenagers in Frisco, Texas, would pop into room C112, face a whiteboard and kneel for one of their five daily prayers.

He said: 'In airports we have a chapel where people can go pray.

When Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

Leonie stated that his letter was a follow up to an "initial inquiry" which "left several questions unanswered". To Frisco ISD's knowledge, it has not received any inquiry from the OAG on this issue.

When the school district refused, Paxton helped the nurse's aide sue, and won.

Lyon said he learned about Paxton's letter through the media on Friday.

Lyon pointed out that the OAG claimed it was responding to an "initial inquiry" but that there was zero evidence the office had ever reached out to the district over its apparent "concerns". He added the district would've liked the opportunity to clarify the confusion before the letter was sent out.

In 2015, Mr Paxton joined 15 other states to oppose a lawsuit from an atheist society to stop school board officials from conducting religious prayers before public meetings.
