White House, some conservatives agree on health care changes

This leaves Trump and company, Ryan and his cohorts pushing a bill Democrats detest, but now we see there is an additional group; we can call them compassionate Republicans that with the above knowledge will not support the new version, which could mean the legislation is dead on arrival.

Vice President Mike Pence is scheduled to meet Wednesday with the Republican Study Committee and the GOP Conference to discuss ACA replacement.

Even though list price premiums for a standard "silver" plan went up by more than 20 percent this year, the average premium paid by HealthCare.gov customers after receiving their tax credit only went up by $1 this year, the report said.

Trump reportedly agreed to support the proposals.

Still, the House members in that meeting were not among those lawmakers who were firmly opposed to the plan, according to NBC News reporting.

Amid the maneuvering, a government report said more than 12 million people have signed up for coverage this year under the very statute that President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans want to repeal.

Politico first reported Friday that Republicans planned to vote next week. Yet it's heading for a collision with the internal politics of Republicans in the House and Senate, where conservatives have been pushing to wind down the Medicaid expansion as soon as next year.

Trump said several changes have been made to the bill, but did not provide details.

So the question is still whether Speaker Ryan can craft a manager's amendment reshaping the bill that can somehow please enough wavering conservatives and other members concerned about coverage losses. But it has provided since its inception health coverage to millions of Americans.

The report also underscored the importance of the ACA's financial assistance, a combination of tax credits to help pay premiums and reduced cost sharing for people with low incomes.

The House bill would freeze the Medicaid expansion in all states by 2020, gradually shrinking the program's enrollment over time, and cap Medicaid spending on individual enrollees.

In a new complication, Sen.

"They won't have the votes unless they change it" further, Meadows said. That left House moderates angry over being asked to take a politically risky vote for legislation that seems likely to be significantly altered.

However, he noted that the bill will have to change before it passes the House and goes on to a Senate vote.

Other changes are still in the works.

The bill would enfeeble Obama's individual mandate - the requirement that Americans buy coverage - by abolishing the tax fine on violators. "It is about giving people more choices and better access to a plan they want and can afford". Premium prices rose, and many insurers dropped out of the law's marketplaces.

His comments came as GOP leaders struggled to stem defections from conservatives and moderates just a week before he hopes to push the measure through the House, and days after congressional budget analysts said it would lead to 24 million more uninsured people in a decade.
