  • ED attaches assets worth Rs 18 crore of Zakir Naik-led IRF

Act (UAPA) have also been slapped on him.

In yet another setback to controversial Islamic preacher and founder of Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) Zakir Naik, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday issued a notice asking him to appear at the NIA Headquarter on March 30. Out of 18 crores, most of the property belongs to the IRF and Harmony Media of Zakir Naik that includes mutual fund, real estate, and few bank accounts. "We have provisionally attached the property in Naik's case and we will soon seize it".

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) attached properties after Naik failed to appear in person before the agency despite four summons served on him. The NIA has directed Naik to be present at its office in Delhi on March 30.

"Some of the witnesses have given statements before the Magistrate, wherein they have stated as to how Dr Zakir Naik had promoted enmity and hatred among the people of different religious beliefs, through his public utterances, and how he had hurt the religious sentiments of followers of other sects or religions", the spokesman said.

Naik who is now in Saudi Arabia is the founding trustee of the Islamic Research Foundation which was banned by the Home Ministry recently.

The central probe agency had registered a criminal case against Naik and others last December after taking cognisance of an NIA complaint filed under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Breaking his silence on a wide range of allegations made against IRF and the Peace TV owned by him, Naik said on Thursday that he is not a terrorist but someone who spreads the message of peace.

Turning down the foundation's claim that the Centre has not given reasons for its order, Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva had said that there is material to establish that the "immediate action appears to have been taken in the interest of sovereignty and integrity of India and public order".
