Bastian Schweinsteiger joins MLS side Chicago Fire

  • Bastian Schweinsteiger joins MLS side Chicago Fire

The star midfielder was first linked with the Fire in November, when he reportedly met with team manager Veljko Paunovic about potentially joining the squad.

The Tribune cited an unidentified club source as saying that Schweinsteiger had signed a one-year deal worth $4.5 million, a salary that makes him one of the highest-paid players in the MLS.

The Chicago Tribune claim the Germany legend could join up with the Fire as early as next week following much speculation.

"I am sad to leave so many friends at Manchester United", said Schweinsteiger.

The retired German worldwide has been nearly completely frozen out of the club's first team plans this season, having made just four appearances across all competitions.

Schweinsteiger has also enjoyed success on the worldwide stage, helping Germany become kings of global football with the World Cup title in 2014. Previously, I think we could satisfy ourselves with what is known domestically. His trophy-laden spell with the club included eight Bundesliga titles and the 2012-13 UEFA Champions League crown. "Now we need to rise to a standard that is set more internationally". "He still is somebody that can show that on the field and (demonstrate) how our guys have to work, prepare, behave, think and work together in order to get to that level", Paunovic said.

Bastian Schweinsteiger sounded absolutely thrilled when he signed for Manchester United in 2015.

Manchester United were already heading to the U.S. this summer, but it seems one (former) employee is going to beat them there. "At one point it became a very personal conversation".

After Mourinho made it absolutely clear that Schweinsteiger was unwanted, he eventually welcomed the German back into the fold and started him in an FA Cup tie against Wigan in January. "We also know we can rely on his capacity to adapt and do that fast". "He sees (things) that nobody sees".
