Bill Gates remains on top of the elite list with a fortune worth USD86 billion.

Hart - a tow-truck driver turned investor - is worth US$9.5 ($NZ13.5b), and climbed the ranks from being the world's 178th richest person a year ago.

The total combined net worth of this year's billionaires was US$7.67 trillion (as of Feb 17), up 18.4% from US$6.48 trillion last year.

This annual increase is at an all-time high in the 31-year history of the list, Forbes said.

The creative engine behind the Windows operating system is the richest person in the world for the fourth consecutive year, and Gates has occupied the top spot 18 times since 1994. He's joined by Warren Buffett, Jeff Bezos, Amancio Ortega and Mark Zuckerberg in the top five.

Trump's dwindling net worth is going the other direction from many other billionaires during the past 12 months, who collectively saw their ranks swell to 2,043 worldwide with the addition of 233 newly minted billionaires, according to Forbes.

"Midtown Manhattan real estate is down; therefore, so is Donald Trump's fortune", the magazine said in a statement.

The US had the most billionaires with 565, while China was second with 319, and Germany was in the third spot with 114.

Mr Gates' fortune was estimated at $75bn past year.

Tech billionaire Bill Gates met with President Donald Trump to discuss progress in programs for global health and development as well as domestic education. "In October 2016, at the time of the release of the 2016 Forbes 400 list of wealthiest Americans, Forbes valued Trump's net worth at $3.7 billion", Forbes said. "Gainers since last year's list outnumbered losers by more than three to one".

Goodnight ranks No. 137 on the new list.

U.S. president, Donald Trump dropped down the list 200 spots to 544th as his fortune nosedived to $3.5bn from $3.7bn the previous year.

Other notable newcomers to the list include: Australian Manny Stul, whose toy company created the popular Shopkins collectibles; American Yvon Chouinard, the founder of outdoor gear maker Patagonia; and Juan Francisco Beckmann Vidal of Mexico, who is chairman of tequila maker Jose Cuervo.
