The statement kicked off a day of opening statements - and opening statements only - as a kind of appetizer for the main course on Tuesday, when Gorsuch will endure 30-minute rounds of questions from the 20 committee members.

While Gorsuch was the one sitting before the committee, another jurist - Judge Merrick Garland - never was far from the minds of the Democrats as they began their examination of the Supreme Court nominee.

Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, argued that the Senate owes a president discretion in picking his judicial nominees and pointed out that Gorsuch had received the highest rating possible from the American Bar Association, the "gold standard" in vetting judicial nominees.

Gorsuch, a 49-year-old Colorado native and judge on the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, was nominated by President Trump to the nation's highest court. Dianne Feinstein on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The Colorado Springs Gazette tweeted a copy of the letter Monday.

Hawaii Democrat Mazie Hirono told the judge, "You rarely seem to rule in favor of the little guy". Before that, he was a high-ranking official in the Justice Department under President George W. Bush. And I look forward to the conversation we'll all have about the meaning of our Constitution and the job of a Supreme Court Justice in our constitutional scheme, Grassley says. Democratic groups are pushing senators to not confirm Gorsuch, pointing to problematic rulings and demanding that the Democrats stand in unity against the nominee.

"Democrats have failed to demonstrate a strong, unified resistance to this nominee despite the fact that he is an ultra-conservative jurist who will undermine our basic freedoms and threaten the independence of the federal judiciary", they wrote. "And that's a question that [he] needs to confront better than he has". Gorsuch sat and listened, mostly in silence, for more than four hours as Democrats repeatedly talked about the other judge they wished were there instead.

'Judge Gorsuch outlined how law firms, and companies in general, had to ask female interviewees about pregnancy plans in order to protect the company, ' Sisk says.

Denver Broncos general manager John Elway has urged the Senate judiciary committee to confirm Neil Gorsuch to the USA supreme court in an endorsement letter written on official team letterhead.

In October, Cruz suggested that the Senate might choose to leave Scalia's seat open indefinitely if Clinton won the presidential election. "Because that would be an absolute shame if a man of this quality was put up to that neglect".

"I have been approached a couple times (about running for office)", Elway said in a 2015 interview with Fox News.

"We're not hearing from enough of the Democratic senators that they will fight this nomination with everything they have".
