Duterte sought and received the support of Myanmar's president and state counselor for the Philippines' chairmanship.

Duterte's attitude towards the European Union, in contrast, has not changed. Widespread prejudice against the country's Muslim Rohingya minority has led to deadly communal violence, posing a political threat to Suu Kyi while earning worldwide opprobrium.

"I'm just interested going after the drug guys". Duterte said, referring to the European Parliament. Duterte has also been condemned for the several thousand deaths caused by the surge of extrajudicial killings in his war on drugs. The Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have also warned Duterte may be overseeing crimes against humanity, with police allegedly running anonymous death squads.

Since taking office previous year, Mr Duterte has led a campaign to eradicate illegal drugs in the Philippines, which has left more than 7,000 people dead.

'More people will die. "I will continue until the last drug lord in the Philippines is killed and the pushers (are) out of the streets", he promised. "This, before, was the favourite of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries because there's a death penalty in Indonesia, Malaysia and I'm trying to revive it", he said during his Sunday speech in Myanmar.

Duterte won election to the nation's highest office after serving as mayor of Davao City, a southern population center, for 22 years.
