1 [unlawfully influencing match results] of the Fifa disciplinary code during the 2018 Fifa World Cup Russia qualifying match between South Africa and Senegal on 12 November 2016.

Lamptey gave an incredibly dubious penalty against Senegal defender Kalidou Koulibaly for an alleged handball, but replays showed the ball wasn't even close, hitting the Napoli defender on the knee.

The hosts won the match 2-1 and were given a highly controversial penalty.

Former Ghana Premier League referee Mercy Tagoe-Quarcoe says Joseph Lamptey's life ban by Federation Internationale de Football Association is a bad omen for match officials in the country.

One his assistants, David Laryea, also from Ghana, had charges against him dismissed by Fifa's disciplinary committee.

The world football body added that "further information concerning the South Africa v. Senegal match in question will be provided once the decision becomes final and binding".

The 42-year-old Lamptey joined FIFA's list of worldwide referees in 2005 but was never selected for a World Cup.

The revelation follows allegations South Africa paid a $US10-million ($A13 million) bribe to help secure the rights to the 2010 World Cup and that officials were duped by an Asian betting syndicate over the results of warm-up matches before the finals.

A penalty awarded late in a scoreless first half could raise suspicion by potentially triggering bets relating to the state of the game and goals scored at half-time.

FIFA, the global football body has reiterated the fact that it will continue to fight match manipulation by erring officials through diverse means and this will include monitoring worldwide betting and physical play through means of reporting bad officials and meting out necessary punishment to offenders.
