  • NEW YORK NY- AUGUST 13 General atmosphere of Samsung Unpacked 2015 featuring the Galaxy S6 edge

Samsung makes the bold claims that Bixby is "fundamentally different from other voice agents or assistants in the market", thanks largely to its ability to adapt to the user.

Though Bixby is a product of Samsung's own internal development, the company's recent acquisition, Viv, will be put to work making Bixby play nice with other third-party services. The company is upping its antics and has announced a brand new intelligent interface called Bixby.

For now, Samsung has not revealed what is powering the Bixby assistant. "Everything you can do with a touch command, you can do with a voice command when using a Bixby-enabled application", boasts Rhee.

The principle behind Bixby appears to be that phones have grown too complicated to use, therefore you need a more natural way to interact with the technology.

According to Samsung, Bixby stands out from the crowd by mastering three key areas: context awareness, completeness, and cognitive tolerance.

A Samsung spokesperson said: "When an application becomes Bixby-enabled, Bixby will be able to support nearly every task that the application is capable of performing using the conventional interface (i.e. touch commands)". The move also threatens to confuse users even more, now that all Android phones are getting Google's own Google Assistant. "Conceptually new " Unveiling Bixby today, Samsung said its approach is different to that of its rivals. To set itself apart from its competitors (Cortana, Google Assistant and Siri), Bixby will serve as a voice-based interface for controlling applications, as opposed to a tool for answering questions and responding to basic commands. Until then, however, Bixby will be heading to Samsung's new smartphones, and the company claims to have laid the groundwork for an AI experience people will actually use, according to the surprisingly little actual information shared in the otherwise lengthy press release.

Samsung noted the (Still unconfirmed, remember) Galaxy S8 will have a dedicated Bixby button on the side of the smartphone created to fire up the virtual assistant. The inconvenience of learning a new interface can cause friction and force users to revert back to old habits. Ultimately users are at the mercy of designers with an increasingly steep curve that makes learning about a new device hard.

"There has been a lot of excitement and speculation about what we will deliver with the launch of the Galaxy 8 later this month, especially due to the advancements in artificial intelligence. This is the fundamental limitation of the current human-to-machine interface and since Samsung makes millions of devices, this problem impacts the core of our business", he said.

For now, the company says that when the Galaxy S8 launches it will come with several pre-installed apps that will work with Bixby. In the future, Samsung plans on expanding Bixby's functionality from just its phone to its long line of appliances, allowing you to control your air conditioner or washing machine, for example, with voice commands.
