The confirmation hearing of U.S. Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch began Monday with opening statements from members of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Blumenthal said it was not "idle speculation" to suggest the Supreme Court might be asked to enforce a subpoena against Trump, citing FBI Director James Comey's testimony before Congress on Monday confirming an ongoing investigation into alleged collusion between Trump's presidential campaign and Russian Federation.
"We need to know what you'll do when you're called upon to stand up to this president, or any president, if he claims the power to ignore laws that protect fundamental human rights", Illinois Democratic Sen.
Graham also made it clear that in addition to Gorsuch being qualified, he is a reassuring choice insofar as he will "keep the conservative philosophy alive and well in the court". Late last week, the Trump Administration submitted a brief arguing that this decision should be upheld. "Truth be told, it should puzzle anyone who ever takes a civics class", said Grassley, R-Iowa, who walked into the hearing room alongside the federal judge. "In fact, a pattern jumps out at me, you rarely seem to find in favor of the 'little guy'".
If Mr Gorsuch, 49, is approved by the Senate he would restore a 5-4 conservative majority on America's highest court.
Gorsuch's comments came after almost four hours of opening statements by the Senators on the committee and responded to Democratic concerns that he often sides with corporations at the expense of individuals.
Schwartz noted a hearing was denied former Democratic President Barack Obama's nominee Merrick Garland. Not one senator voted against Gorsuch's confirmation. Be that as it may, as many, many outlets, including pro-abortion liberal publications, acknowledge, the Republicans were under no obligation to hold confirmation hearings on him a year ago.
The confirmation hearing will continue through this week.
"Judge, I look forward to hearing more about your exceptional record". But with only 52 Republicans in the Senate, Republicans could not break a Democrat filibuster, if there is one.
Republican Senators managed to hold a Supreme Court seat vacant for over a year, but now they are ready to get down to business. "The Supreme Court is too important for us not to find a way to end our destructive gridlock and bitter partisanship".
Gardner sung Gorsuch's praises as a legal mind and as a Coloradan in his remarks to the committee, citing some of Gorsuch's own words while laying out why he believes Gorsuch should be confirmed. Gorsuch was set to face questioning by senators today. It was meant to impugn Gorsuch's integrity but nobody except the Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee put any credence in the out-of-the blue letter sent at the eleventh hour to the committee by a former student.
