Hardline priest sworn in as head of India's Uttar Pradesh state

  • Yogi Adityanath

Will he be able to control the Yogi and his tongue in future remains to be seen, but there will be questions asked to prime minister if the choice of Yogi Adityanath as the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh is betrayal of trust.

"The selection of Adityanath has once again exposed the oft-repeated claim of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that development will be its main agenda", a CPM politburo statement said.

On Saturday evening, after a suspense-filled week, the BJP's senior leadership named Adityanath, five-time Gorakhpur lawmaker, for the chief minister's post, and in a departure of sorts also named not one, but two deputy chief ministers.

Outgoing chief minister Akhilesh Yadav and his father and Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav also attended Adityanath's coronation. HT gathered that about a dozen other lawmakers from east UP and few from west too plan to offer their seats to Yogi, a trend with most sitting chief ministers. If it were a country, Uttar Pradesh would be the world's fifth-most populous.

"This needs to be read in the context of the fact that the BJP did not give even a single ticket to Muslim candidates in the whole of Uttar Pradesh", he said. Had he not been made deputy chief minister, he would have got a heart attack. "So this is the decision of the MLAs of Uttar Pradesh which was approved by the central party", Naidu said.

The BJP swept to power in the Uttar Pradesh assembly election, decimating the opposition and winning 312 of the 403 seats. BJP has appointed a priest as chief minister who will not take forward the agenda of development but will push the RSS agenda.

44-year-old Adityanath Yogi, who was sworn-in as the 21st CM of Uttar Pradesh, has promised to work for all sections of the society without any discrimination, pursuing the agenda of 'sabkasath, sabkavikas'.

Adityanath introduced the BJP sankalp patra (manifesto) to the officers who would have to ensure the fulfilment of the promises made therein. "So it is very unfair on the part of anybody including our political rivals to criticise him without giving a fair opportunity to the newly elected chief minister", Mr Naidu said.

The BJP-led government yesterday won the floor test in Manipur Assembly with a voice vote.
