  • Jeff Bezos net worth rose more than any other billionaire on Forbes 2017 Billionaires List

Meanwhile Microsoft founder Bill Gates kept his top spot on the Forbes list, with a fortune of US$86bil (up from US$75bil in 2016) for the fourth year running.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is the second richest tech billionaire on the Forbes Billionaires list, with a net worth of $72.8 billion, a figure that's $27.6 billion higher than a year ago.

This puts him 200 places below his rank in 2016, with an estimated wealth of $3.5bn compared to $3.7bn of last year and $4.5bn the year before.

Much of Trump's slide, the publication said, is linked to a drop in the value of real estate in midtown Manhattan.

In 2016, Forbes listed 1,810 billionaires.

Forbes still has Bill Gates has the richest person on the planet - his fourth straight year. Also new to the list is Japan's first self-made woman billionaire, Yoshiko Shinohara, who started a part-time staffing firm from her one-bedroom Tokyo apartment to help women get into the workforce.

Forbes notes that Trump is the first billionaire president in USA history and said " the business that made him rich remains intact".

In the United States, Carl Cook trails just behind Stan Kroenke, who grew famous past year for becoming St. Louis' favorite villain by moving the Rams football team to Los Angeles. Both brothers have a net worth of $1.1 billion and are newcomers to the list this year. Ambani, 59, leads the pack of Indian billionaires, coming in at the 33rd position with a net worth of United States dollars 23.2 billion.

Trump hasn't released his tax returns, but during the election campaign he claimed to be worth in excess of $10 billion.

As an example, he cited a US program started under President George W. Bush that has provided more than $70 billion in funding to, among other initiatives, treat more than 11 million people living with HIV and AIDS.

More than a few these fabulously rich folks have local ties, including Medford native and former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, whose $47.5 billion in the bank is good enough for 10th on the list. What do you think of Bill Gates being No. 1 again?

According to its methodology, Forbes bases its billionaires list on a "snapshot of wealth" taken on February 17 by valuing assets using stock prices and global exchange rates.
