  • Inferno guts apartment building, burns 12 homes in Overland Park

Fire crews were called to the Royale Apartments at CityPlace at 3.30 pm, where they found one building engulfed and almost completely destroyed, reported KMBC. The building is still under construction.

"It's a bit of a war zone down there frankly", Rhodes said.

Several fire departments were called in to help Overland Park crews.

"A fireman over there he said it looked like it got into the walls so they were trying to contain it so it doesn't spread anymore it looks like". There are no immediate reports of injuries. He said crews were working to ensure all residents displaced by the house fires had proper support.

"(It's a) rapidly-growing fire, probably a lot of fuel in there with all the construction material and whatnot", Rhodes said at a news conference.

KCTV reported the building that caught fire was part of the $450 million City Place development. "The winds have pushed a lot of the embers and some of the heat exposure to the south where we've got a subdivision of homes that abuts this property". The fire spread to nearby buildings and homes.

"Our thoughts and prayers remain with those who are affected and will continue to be affected by this event", Block said.
