Fairweather said: "This is a significant decision for a club which was founded in 1744 and retains numerous values and aspirations of its founding members".

McIlroy took umbrage with the members who voted against opening the club to women.

Catriona Matthew, the Scottish women's No 1, described Muirfield admitting women members as a "positive step" and now Charley Hull, who was alongside the Scot in Team GB during golf's return to the Olympics last summer, has said she would have no hesitation playing there if the venue staged the British Women's Open one day. Muirfield golf club members have voted to admit women members after the privately owned club voted eighty percent in favour in updating the membership policy.

Hull would support switching the event if the regulation is not overturned by the 15 members of the club's board - which must agree unanimously over any adjustment to the course's bylaws.

"Our special nature - "a gentleman's club where golf is played" - is quite unique with its fraternity built inter alia on foursomes play with a round taking only the same time as lunch and leaving enough time for a further round after lunch (even in mid winter)".

"We've got quite a complicated admissions process and we have a waiting list".

"I think that's great", he said.

Muirfield is the last of the clubs on the Open roster - five in Scotland, four in England and one in Northern Ireland - to permit women members.

"And yeah, we'll go back and we'll play The Open Championship, because they will let women members in, but every time I go to Muirfield now I won't have a great taste in my mouth", he added.

It took longer than some members might have liked, but after a 273-year-old holdover, the Muirfield Golf Club voted Tuesday, with the necessary two-thirds in support, to begin admitting women as members to the club.

According to the Daily Mail, a 2013 Open study estimated that the tournament was worth about £70million to the local East Lothian economy and the business community. I'd be happy to play there, I'm open to anything. Nick Faldo and Vardon contemporary James Braid are the only British Open champions to win twice at Muirfield.

Thomas Bjorn was one of the first to welcome Muirfield to the 21st century on twitter, while Gary Player said the vote was crucial to the future of golf.
