  • Senate Intelligence Committee asks Roger Stone to preserve records

Roger Stone, a close confidante of president Donald Trump who previously served as an informal adviser during the 2016 U.S. election, is firmly in the crosshairs of the United States intelligence committee for alleged links to a Russian hacking campaign.

Republican committee Chairman Richard Burr and ranking Democrat Mark Warner said the hearing will focus on ways that Russian Federation works to influence election campaigns and public opinion.

Roger Stone says he welcomes the opportunity to publicly testify before lawmakers.

The Senate and House intelligence committees are investigating Russia's hacking of Democratic groups and possible contacts between Trump associates and Russian Federation.

Schiff, the committee's ranking member, asked Comey a series of questions related to Stone, including about his past claims of communications with Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, which published hacked emails from the Democratic National Committee and Hillary ClintonHillary Rodham ClintonTHE MEMO: Five takeaways from Comey's big day FBI investigating Trump-Russia ties Federal Bureau of Investigation probing far-right news sites: report MORE campaign chair John Podesta.

"It's the new McCarthyism, and it's mudslinging", Stone said on SiriusXM radio's "The Wilkow Majority".

Stone has said he communicated with the hacker, Guccifer 2.0, who has taken credit for breaching the Democratic National Committee.

"I had no contact with Russians. Thus, one would need a time machine in order to collude", Stone said. I'm not gonna stop fighting for Donald Trump, nor are they going to silence me.

Later, Stone tweeted: "I have total confidence that WikiLeaks and my hero Julian Assange will educate the American people soon". "I am willing to appear voluntarily if the committee isn't looking for the headline of issuing a subpoena", he said. Schiff asked Comey whether he read any press reports on Stone "proudly" boasted of engaging in political dirty tricks and whether he was aware Stone was in communication with Guccifer 2.0, a hacker believed to be a front for Russian intelligence.
