Samsung officially unveils new virtual assistant Bixby ahead of Galaxy S8 launch

21 March, 2017, 15:19 | Author: Alberta Rodriguez

In time, you'll be able to control nearly all of your Samsung devices through Bixby, including appliances.

"There has been a lot of excitement and speculation about what we will deliver with the launch of the Galaxy S8 later this month, especially due to the advancements in artificial intelligence".

Now for most people, this might not be an ideal Google Assistant replacement since Bixby does not have the vast amount of knowledge and this is exactly Samsung is also not trying to compete with the likes of Google Assistant, etc. Initially, Bixby will be launched in English and Korean with a dedicated button on the phone to activate it.

With regards to completeness, Samsung claims that you will be able to perform any task using the apps without touching your phone's screen.

What does that mean?

It can also understand user commands with incomplete information and will put them together to get things done. We're more than likely just talking about the stock Samsung apps here, like phone, messaging, email, calendar, etc. The only requisite is that those apps must be Bixby-enabled. Keep that in mind for a while. In short, Samsung wants you to reduce the friction to get something done without going through several hoops and tapping in an app.

What can Bixby do within an application?

When an application becomes Bixby-enabled, Bixby will be able to support nearly every task that the application is capable of performing using the conventional interface, Samsung says. In the future customers are expected to be able to control their air conditioner or TV through Bixby.

Samsung has stated that Bixby will be able to control apps by being contextually aware and allowing a user to jump between touch commands and voice commands. Bixby doesn't require users to remember exact form of the voice commands.

Samsung is eager to show it's serious about Bixby, and services and software in general. It has, however, released details about software on the handset, a voice-powered, AI assistant called Bixby.

Samsung's new technology has been carefully kept from the public, its name is one of the few characteristics known, as well as a featured button on new Samsung devices that will allow Bixby to launch and assist. The company says that Bixby will prompt you for extra information, which will then let it participate minimally in the tasks you perform. Ahead of next week's announcement of the Galaxy S8, Samsung has introduced the world to Bixby, its own entry into the increasingly crowded AI landscape. The company is also planning to release an SDK to third-party developers to further expand the assistant's capabilities.
