After ranking fourth for the last two years, Norway emerged at the top, displacing three-time topper Denmark for the first time.

"This year the World Happiness Report gives special attention to the social foundations of happiness, including especially happiness in the workplace", the press release said. Ireland, the United States, Germany, Belgium, and the Luxembourg also occupy high positions, all above the UK.

Once again, Nordic and Western European countries rule the roost.

The five least happy countries were Rwanda, Syria, Tanzania, Burundi and the Central African Republic. Ukraine also appears among them, emerging as the odd one out - something that can be easily explained by their ongoing conflict with Russian Federation due to the occupation of Crimea.

Norway is the happiest place on earth, says the report prepared by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), a global initiative launched by the United Nations in 2012.

It also delves into different case-studies, including why Africa remains terminally unhappy and why China's smiles are on the rise.

The UN report released on Monday showed that India was behind the majority of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) nations, apart from war-ravaged Afghanistan, that stood at 141.

"Most countries in the world project that life circumstances will improve in future".

The report's independent researchers poll about 1,000 people each year in each of the 155 countries and ask them questions created to reveal their individual overall happiness.

"The United States can and should raise happiness by addressing America's multi-faceted social crisis-rising inequality, corruption, isolation, and distrust", he wrote.

Rounding out the rest of the top ten in order were Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland, Finland, Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Sweden.

Apocryphally regarded as the happiest nation in the world for inventing the Gross National Happiness metric, Bhutan has somehow never performed well on the Happiness Report.

According to the report, the biggest average differences between the scores of happy and unhappy countries were from social support, GDP per capita and healthy life expectancy.

The United States dropped in its ranking, falling behind Israel and sinking to number 14 on the list.

However, economic factors remain a certain contributor to achieving social cohesion and overall happiness, the report finds.

According to researchers, it takes more than just having money to be happy. The authors attributed the dip to a decrease of social and personal freedoms as well as an increase in perceived corruption.
