AA Roadwatch have warned drivers to take additional care if travelling on the roads while the yellow weather warning is in place.

Mr Madge added: 'During the week, there is a likelihood we will see wintry showers in parts of north England as well on high ground and there will be a mix of hail, sleet and snow'.

Temperatures are expected to plummet close to or below freezing tonight as a cold weather front moves in across the country. A breezy or even windy night ahead too, with fresh and gusty west to southwest winds.

Risky road conditions are expected overnight and in the morning, with a snow and ice warning in place across the country.

The forecaster said Tuesday and Wednesday would be the coldest days this week, with daytime temperatures dropping to as low as 7C across the UK. It will be a bright day for many with sunny spells and showers, some wintry especially in the early morning, but turning more to rain or sleet in the middle of the day.

The warning was issued this morning and is valid until 12 noon tomorrow, Tuesday, March 21.

"Remember, stopping distances are 10 times longer in ice and snow".

Snow is also expected on Tuesday, when the weather will be dry with sunshine initially.

There will be clearer skies as the week goes on, with daytime temperatures warming up to 12C on Friday, with highs of 14C forecast for Saturday.
