  • Liverpool banned from signing academy players for two years

It is thought that Liverpool worked alongside the Premier League to ensure a quick resolution to the matter, a spokesman confirming that the club accepts their sanctions.

Liverpool made an application to register the Stoke player, with compensation between the two clubs agreed, past year but the application was rejected by the Premier League Board.

This second year of the ban has been suspended for three years.

Liverpool have been handed an academy transfer ban and ordered to pay £100,000 after admitting their part in the "tapping up" of a Stoke youngster.

However, the application was rejected by the Premier League Board. Indeed, it was Liverpool's refusal to pay thousands in school fees that led to the quarrel.

Liverpool admitted to the rule breaches but have still been hit with a fine and ban on signing academy players, although the second year of that ban will be suspended for a three-year period.

The Premier League made clear Liverpool had co-operated fully and had even agreed satisfactory recompense with Stoke for the youngster's move.

The subsequent investigation revealed that Liverpool offered additional expenses to the player, such as match tickets, which are also prohibited.

A new five-step process for analysing academy switches has been introduced with the Premier League able to demand the phone records of all involved if they get suspicious.

The Merseyside club were found guilty of breaching Premier League rules regarding youth recruitment. That is a move which earned congratulation from the Premier League.

Darren Gray, head of commercial litigation at Manchester law firm Clear Commercial, who represents the family along with media consultant Jonathan Hartley, said: "The one issue that isn't being addressed in this whole sorry saga is that a schoolboy has been left unable to pursue his dream of playing professional football".

Despite the humiliation of the ban, it does not affect first-team players - meaning the club could still sign Fulham teenager Ryan Sessegnon, who they have shown an interest in.
