Trump grants approval for controversial Keystone XL Pipeline

  • The Keystone XL pipeline would carry oil from Canadian tar sands to US refineries but was put on hold by former president Barack Obama over environmental concerns

First, Trump claims that the pipeline would create 28,000 jobs, which is a vast overestimation-the State Department under the Obama administration found that it would actually create 3,900 direct construction jobs if it was built over the course of a year, or 1,950 over two years.

The permit was signed by Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Thomas Shannon Jr after Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who was chief executive of oil giant ExxonMobil before joining Trump's cabinet, exempted himself from participation in the pipeline decision to avoid a conflict of interest. Both projects had drawn massive protests and had been stalled by the Obama administration.

Trump was due to speak about the decision Friday at 10:15 am (1415 GMT), his spokesman Sean Spicer said on Twitter.

Nebraska - a key state involved in the Keystone expansion - has yet to approve the project, and it doesn't look like the fight to build will be easy. Keystone would strengthen US energy security by increasing access to Canada's "dependable supply of crude oil", said the State Department.

"We've got some work to do in Nebraska to get our permits there", Girling replied.

Fielden said Kinder Morgan "has shippers already lined up", though with Canadian oil production slated to rise, at least one more pipeline is needed "maybe more". Well, the historic president is now approving restarting construction of the Keystone XL oil pipeline. The deputy secretary would ordinarily issue approval, but that position is vacant because the administration hasn't been able to agree on a nominee. When it was first proposed, the United States was very much dependent on oil from the Middle East, but domestic production has almost doubled in recent years.

It also traverses Montana and South Dakota.

The proposed pipeline is created to connect Alberta, Canada, to refineries in the U.S.in Texas and Louisiana by way of Steele City, Nebraska.

The Ogallala is one of the world's largest aquifers, covering almost 450,000 square kilometers and eight US states. Organized opposition in Nebraska has hindered pipeline developer TransCanada, but leading opponents acknowledge they'll face more of an uphill struggle this time. It would move roughly 800,000 barrels of oil per day, more than one-fifth of Canada's oil Canada to the U.S.

Trump didn't specify which company was being told to drop its lawsuit, but no company other than TransCanada fits the description. "I think we have many allies, Native and non-Native, who will come together for this struggle".

Without the pipeline, Carr said the oil would move by the more risky method of rail. "This fight is not over, it is just beginning". Since then we've had the three hottest years ever measured on our planet.

Russ Girling, president of TransCanada, promised "thousands of jobs" with the construction of the pipeline that should be a boon to local economies. Wringing that bitumen from Alberta's vast forests involved tree cutting and a lot of energy, thus adding greenhouse-gas emissions to the extraction process.
