  • Swedish Police Release Image of Truck Attack Suspect

Nobody has been arrested in connection with the attack police said. Police have not confirmed the number of deaths, but Swedish media outlets are reporting that at least three people were killed.

The lorry crashed into the front of Ahlens department store in the middle of the afternoon on Drottninggatan (Queen Street), one of the city's major pedestrian thoroughfares.

14 July 2016, Nice, France: A man drove a truck for 2km (1.2 miles) through a large crowd gathered to watch Bastille Day fireworks in Nice.

Intensive intelligence work is underway in order to identify the person or persons behind the attack, the spokesman said.

Stockholm authorities said 15 adults and children were being treated, of whom 9 were severely injured.

The Swedish brewery Spendrups said one of its trucks had been hijacked just a few blocks from the crash scene earlier Friday.

"Our message will always be clear: you will not defeat us, you will not govern our lives, you will never, ever win", Prime Minister Stefan Lofven, who had earlier described the assault as a terrorist attack, told a news conference.

On December 19, 12 people were killed and 48 injured when a truck was driven into a crowded Christmas market in Berlin.

A government source told Reuters all Swedish government offices had been closed.

"I couldn't see if anyone was driving but it was out of control".

The attack was the latest to hit the Nordic region after the 2015 shootings in Copenhagen, Denmark, that killed three people and the 2011 bombing and shooting by far right extremist Anders Behring Breivik that killed 77 people in Norway. But Radio Sweden reports that the Swedish Security Service says there is no confirmation the incident was an act of terrorism.

The Stockholm metro was also completely shut down, with the attack taking place at the city's T-Centralen station, through which all the city's lines pass.

Police arrested a man in Marsta, a northern Stockholm suburb close to the worldwide airport. The United States and Sweden are committed partners in this fight, and we stand ready to offer any assistance Sweden might require in investigating this brutal and senseless attack. The Finnish Border Guard stepped up security measures at airports and harbors following the Stockholm attack and Helsinki police tightened security in the Finnish capital.

Abdulwahab rigged a vehicle with explosives in the hope that the blast would drive people to Drottninggatan - the street hit Friday - where he would set off devices strapped to his chest and back.
