  • Another Type of Mosquito May Carry Zika

Researchers found Zika RNA in Asian tiger mosquitoes (Aedes albopictus).

Although the Zika virus may have dropped from the headlines since last summer, warmer days are coming back and with the rising temperatures, mosquitoes will also be returning, bringing with them the potential for individuals to contract the mosquito-borne infection as well as others carried by the insects. According to the statement, "Zika virus (in the family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus) is transmitted by female Aedes mosquitoes".

This doesn't prove that the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) can transmit Zika to people.

In addition, state officials have vowed a more robust response to Zika.

She said residents should take the "3D" approach to protecting themselves: Drain or dump standing water, in kiddie pools, bird baths, and anywhere else, including something as small as a bottle cap; Dress appropriately by wearing light colored, loose fitting clothing, and long sleeves and trousers when possible; and defend against bites by using a mosquito repellent that has been registered by the Environmental Protection Agency, such as DEET, Picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. The primary Aedes species vector of Zika virus worldwide is A. aegypti, which is responsible for the current outbreak in the Americas.

The greatest concern is for unborn babies when the mother is infected with the Zika virus, which can cause small head syndrome, brain damage and other birth defects.

John Shepard, a researcher in the mosquito surveillance unit of the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, said Milford's approach to fighting mosquitoes is the most effective.

Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes abound in Florida, throughout most of the Southeast and in all the states along the southern border of the U.S., according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The role of Aedes albopictus in transmitting Zika remains a mystery. The range of Aedes albopictus expands into the Midwest.

"The mosquito itself is hard to control with normal control techniques, so we're constantly looking for new technology that can assist us in getting these mosquitoes better under control", Leal said.

Currently, there is no vaccine or medicine for Zika.

"You know you have good mosquito control here, you got to make sure you talk to them".
