  • Futuristic Audi e-tron concept previewed in new sketches

After teasing the vehicle yesterday, Audi has officially unveiled its new electric vehicle concept, the e-tron Sportback, at the Auto Shanghai 2017 today.

At the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, Audi introduced the E-Tron Quattro to signal its electric crossover agenda.

Inside, the e-tron Sportback holds up to four people.

Four individual seats are separated by a tall centre console with open storage cubbies, but expect a more conventional interior in 2019 when the e-tron Sportback concept will hit showrooms as Audi's second EV-only offering. On similar lines, it has connected LED tail lamps, which will be first seen in the all- new production-spec A8 this year. Typically massive concept-car wheels feature, as does a subtle "double-bubble" roof along with a sunken bonnet and inset front grille. Audi's flat-bottom steering wheel has become a flat-top wheel as well, which fits in front of a fantastic display with room for for navigation and more while still displaying the more common data one would expect in the instrument cluster on their vehicle.

Audi has also updated its virtual cockpit for the new vehicle, giving it a wider design in front of the driver.

Though not confirmed by the automaker, the upcoming concept, as its name, "E-Tron", indicates, is likely to have an all-electric powertrain like the E-Tron Quattro concept.

On the road the vehicle maker says, in most circumstances, the e-tron Sportback only relies on its front motor for efficiency purposes. Digitally controlled LEDs at the front and rear of the auto produce "an excellent light yield", Audi says, while minuscule digital projectors "literally make their mark on the road ahead, turning light into a versatile, dynamic channel of communication with the surroundings".

As for power, it is provided courtesy of three electric motors - two that power each rear wheel, and one for the front axle. Total output is 429 horsepower, although that number can jump to 496 in "boost" mode. Audi claims that it'll reach 60mph in just 4.3 seconds, and has an electronically limited top speed of 130mph. "That applies as much to the infrastructure and financial support as it does to sales". As well as providing visual evidence of a wide track and dynamic potential, they also bind the e-tron Sportback into the brand's DNA. Audi is showing this technology as a concrete foretaste of the production version. Range is estimated at more than 310 miles on a single charge.
