General election: What you need to know

"We need a general election and we need one now", May said. He stepped down when the country voted to leave.

May, who commands only a slim majority in parliament's lower House of Commons, said that a new mandate would strengthen her hand in Brexit talks. The Conservative Party has a slim majority in Parliament, but May is betting they'll gain seats.

After her predecessor narrowly lost a referendum gamble to keep Europe's second-ranked economy in the EU, Brussels once harboured hopes that Britain might have a change of heart under fellow Conservative May, who had favoured "Remain" over Brexit.

Tim Farron, leader of the Liberal Democrats, who have campaigned for a referendum to be held on the terms of Brexit, said the election proved a chance to change the country's direction.

Analysts at ETX Capital say in a note to clients that the election call "adds another layer of complexity to an already uncertain picture for United Kingdom and European assets". Leaders of European Union states are due to adopt negotiating guidelines at an April 29 summit, and the bloc will prepare detailed plans for the talks with Britain by late May.

Asked why Mrs May did not want to take part in any debates, a Conservative spokesman said: "The choice at this election is already clear - strong and stable leadership in the national interest with Theresa May and the Conservatives or weak and unstable coalition government led by Jeremy Corbyn".

The EU said yesterday it did not expect negotiating guidelines for Britain's exit from the bloc to be affected by the British government's call for an early general election. "Since I became Prime Minister I have said that there should be no election until 2020", Ms May said on Tuesday.

We get answers to your questions after Theresa May called a surprise general election, taking place in seven weeks.

The Queen will likely open the new Parliamentary session in mid-June after the election is over and a new government has been formed. At least two said they would not run. They are wrong. They underestimate our determination to get the job done and I am not prepared to let them endanger the security of millions of working people across the country. The BBC, ITV, Sky, and Channel 4 are yet to comment on the matter (and are unlikely to until the election is rubber-stamped by Parliament on Wednesday) but privately they will be keen to stage events.

Theresa May's decision to "reluctantly" call an early election marks her first major u-turn as prime minister. They will target seats around London that voted "Remain" in the European Union referendum and are represented by "Leave"-backing Tories".

May's office says she will speak at 11:15 a.m. (1015GMT) Tuesday, after the weekly meeting of her Cabinet.

Urging voters to "stand up for Scotland", Sturgeon said in a tweet that May's Conservative Party see "a chance to move the U.K.to the right, force through a hard Brexit, and impose deeper cuts".

The Scottish National Party now holds 54 of Scotland's 59 seats in the British Parliament, making it the third-largest party there.
