While entering with initials so the organizers wouldn't suspect she was female, they quickly spotted her during the race and tried to rip her bib numbers off.

Kathrine Switzer became a hero of the women's rights movement in 1967 after she officially completed the then all-male race.

Switzer said the transformation of her experience of the marathon mimicked the social revolution that had taken place in women's running and women's sport in general.

The race has only retired one other number in its 121-year history: No. 61 for the 61 races started by Johnny Kelley.

Runners crowded into the Public Garden and Boston Common after they finished racing, where many met up with their personal fans and spectators to celebrate their incredible feats.

Almost 895 miles away, one of their teammates, Notre Dame Dean and Professor, Laura Carlson, completed her sixth consecutive Boston Marathon. Her boyfriend, who was running with her, pushed the official aside so that she could proceed with the race. "He inspired me to completely not only change my life, but to change millions of women's lives".

In addition to holding court at panels and events throughout the weekend, Switzer also held the tape runners break at the Boston Athletic Association Invitational Mile on Saturday and threw out the first pitch at the Red Sox game on Sunday. On Monday, the 70-year-old completed the race just a few minutes slower than she did in her first try, in 4:44:31, The New York Times reported.

Jordan Hasay from the USA, who was making her debut in marathon clocked 2:23.00 for third place. "I just hope my good time today wasn't just because of the tailwind". It was extremely validating. The Americans had their best results since the race went pro in 1986, placing two women in the top four and six men in the top 10, including runner-up Galen Rupp.

"I wasn't there to prove anything", she said.

In all, 26,411 people finished the race on Monday - 97 percent of those who started - including 11,973 women.

Jimmy Golen has covered the Boston Marathon for The Associated Press since 1995.
