Original StarCraft, Brood War Now Free with Patch 1.18

Oh, and at the same time Blizzard also just made StarCraft free to download, which is pretty cool. But if you don't, or you're looking for some oldschool RTS action, the original game is available right now.

Announced back in late May, Patch 1.18 for the original Starcraft includes "bug fixes and improvements, including the ability to rebind keys; observer mode; modern anti-cheat measures", as well as compatibility improvements for Windows 7, 8.1, and 10.

Blizzard's decision to make the title freely available comes ahead of this summer's Remastered edition of StarCraft, which promises enhanced 4K graphics, better audio, high-quality cinematics, and a redesigned matchmaking system.

Fans can grab the StarCraft free download, having been released as part of a new update for the game. Full patch notes for StarCraft 1.18 can be found below.

Added windowed fullscreen or windowed mode; use Alt+Enter to switch between.

Battle.net hosts installers for Windows and Mac OS.

Added cursor clamping in-game while windowed; unclamped in menus.

The profile section is now unavailable.

Improved gameplay responsiveness during multiplayer by increasing turn rate to match LAN speeds over Battle.net.

Improved installation and patching performance.

Fixed IME support and other text artifacts in Battle.net menus.
