Police initially said 15 people were arrested.

"The charges include arrests for assault with a deadly weapon and several other felony assaults", police said in an announcement Saturday evening, adding that more arrests would likely be pursued after video and social media posts were reviewed.

CNN has picked up the story, noting that the violent clash in Berkeley is just one of many demonstrations happening around the country for Tax Day, with some of these focused on pushing for President Trump to release his tax returns.

In addition to Damigo, the Berkeley protest reportedly attracted numerous prominent "alt-right" figures, including 41-year-old Kyle Chapman who is better known by his alias "Based Stickman", referring to his practice of carrying a wooden stick - such as those seen above - as a weapon at public protests. He held a crumpled "Stop Liberal Intolerance" sign in his hand.

A man is sprayed with a chemical irritant as fights break out between Trump supporters and opponents in Berkeley, Calif., on Saturday. Opposing groups quickly organised their own event. "We're here to say we care", said Singh.

And again in early March, when about 500 pro- and anti-Trump demonstrators punched, sprayed and clubbed one another, according to local news reports.

Anti-riot police appeared to have said fuck it, let these idiots beat each other up.

Trump has said that Americans "don't care at all" about his tax returns, but polls show 74% of Americans say he should release them.

Counter-demonstrators then announced a rally at the same place.

A peaceful mood reigned at marches in more than 100 other cities across the USA on Saturday, as protesters demanded the release of the president's personal tax returns.

Trump, a billionaire property tycoon, released a financial statement but has kept his tax returns private, both during the election campaign and since taking office in January.

With no official communication between the city and protesters, officers were forced to estimate how many demonstrators would show up, [Berkeley Police Officer Byron White] said.

Rich Black, who organized the March for Trump event at the same site last month, organized a coalition of right-wing groups under the aegis of The Liberty Revival Alliance.

The marches coincided with the traditional April 15 deadline for USA federal tax returns, though the filing date was pushed backed two days this year.
