Appealing for calm, China says US wants talks on North Korea

"But the era of strategic patience is over", he declared.

Pence's visit to the tense DMZ dividing North and South Korea came at the start of a 10-day trip to Asia and underscored USA commitment.

Pence, his wife Karen and two daughters walked inside the main hall of colorful Senso-ji temple Tuesday as incense burned.

Pence is on a 10-day Asia trip that will also take him to Indonesia and Australia. It is his first trip to Asia as vice president.

Japan had a $69 billion trade surplus with the United States a year ago, the U.S. Treasury Department said, expressing concern over what it called the "persistence" of the imbalance.

China has recently shown "tangible indications" that it is cooperating with the U.S.to turn up the pressure on Pyongyang, a senior State Department official said Monday. Noting Trump's recent military actions in Syria and Afghanistan, Pence said North Korea "would do well not to test his resolve" or the resolve of United States armed forces in the region.

Pence said Trump sees the talks as a way to improve business ties with Japan and is hoping for quick results.

In a softening of USA rhetoric, acting assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Susan Thornton told reporters the U.S. wasn't seeking regime change or conflict in North Korea.

The time of dictating orders by brandishing the United States military might has gone.

American Chamber of Commerce leaders have voiced concern that the Trump administration is being overly critical of the trade agreement by putting too much emphasis on a trade deficit that is just one aspect of a complex and evolving economic relationship.
