Apple gets autonomous vehicle testing permit in California

Last Friday, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) released an updated list with the names of all the companies allowed to test autonomous vehicles. Examples of companies holding autonomous testing permits in California include Google, Tesla, and Bosch. Apparently, the company will instead focus on developing self-driving technology, just like its all-time competitor, Google.

For years, annual iPhone rumors have been forced to compete with similarly hyped whisperings regarding the possibility of an Apple self-driving vehicle.

Like those other companies, Apple's test vehicles will have human drivers behind the wheel when they go out on public roads, according to Bloomberg News.

Few details have been revealed about Apple's plans for self-driving cars, according to Autotrader executive analyst Michelle Krebs.

No prizes for guessing that whatever Apple does with an autonomous auto - be it one that they have built from scratch, or one that is completed in partnership with another company, it will most definitely arrive with Apple CarPlay, and has charging sockets that will cater specifically for Apple products.

It has always been known that Apple is working on automotive-related projects, but the company has never publicly confirmed any details.

"The company is investing heavily in the study of machine learning and automation, and is excited about the potential of automated systems in many areas, including transportation", Kenner wrote.

The thing is, the permit is for the cars themselves, but actually applies to the technology behind the self-driving capability of those cars. According to unnamed insiders who spoke with the The New York Times a year ago, Apple laid off dozens of staffers as part of the shakeup.

Apple has officially joined the autonomous vehicle race.

That means Apple has a long way to catch up in self-driving technology. Apple has reportedly a thousand workers assigned to the Project Titan.
